34+ Weird Balconies We Can't Believe Exist
Balconies are usually places of relaxation, where you can enjoy a breath of fresh air and a peaceful, quiet moment. But what happens when creativity runs wild or practicality flies out the window? From confusing decorations to unusual space-saving solutions to downright puzzling designs, these are the weirdest balconies we've ever seen. Get ready to wonder, "What were they thinking?"
Another Brick in the Wall
Usually surrounded by railings or glass, balconies can be a little exposed to the neighbors or people on the street below. But this homeowner came up with an ingenious idea to keep the snoopers out: they built a brick wall all the way around their balcony. While it may give them some extra privacy, we’re very concerned about the balcony collapsing under all that weight.
Pup’s New Balcony
Why should it only be humans who get their own balconies when our furry friends would love their own private relaxation space as well? The owner of this adorable doggo had the same thought. The sight of this fluffy chow chow surveying the street below would be enough to brighten any passerby’s day. We’re going to start a petition to make sure every new home is built with a dog balcony. It’s for the good of humanity.
Odd One Out
We get that some people like to stand out from the crowd, but this is a bit much. Obviously, one person in this building has decided they’re a cut above the rest and had a balcony built just for them. We’re a bit confused as to how they got planning permission for this irregularity as it looks so out of place on the balcony-less building. Let’s hope they at least invite their neighbors around to enjoy the view.
Urban Jungle
Some people have green fingers and some people don’t—that’s just the way the world works. This balcony owner obviously has a magic touch when it comes to cultivating luscious jungle plants in a tiny space and we are here for it. Maybe the neighbors might prefer if things were kept a little more trimmed back, but we think this balcony is stunning. We wonder what this talented urban gardener will decide to grow next.
Be Prepared
It’s always good to be prepared, but this apartment owner appears to have taken things to a whole new level. Covering your balcony in camo feels like a weird move given that the rest of the building is totally visible. Although this looks pretty sinister, we wonder whether the owner is actually a nature enthusiast, looking to photograph birds from his camouflaged perch. Whatever the reason behind this unusual decor choice, it’s probably better not to ask too many questions.
Shut the Front Door
We bet the architect who designed this home thought they had considered everything. The charming painted wooden planks, the cream accents, the quaint roof details—it’s a beautiful home. Unfortunately, they forgot about one thing. If anyone wants to use that balcony, they’ll either have to scale the wall from the window on the other side or tunnel through the walls. Let’s hope the residents get that fixed ASAP so they can fully enjoy their lovely new house.
Window Shopping
They say that some balconies are just for show and people don’t actually use them, but we didn’t realize some construction teams take that so literally. This place seems to have been built with absolutely no windows or doors on one side, but the balconies have been added on anyway. Honestly, we can’t tell if this was intentional or a silly mistake, but let’s make one thing clear, we’re not rushing to move in.
Come on Up
Rock climbing is having a moment and we understand why some climbers want to add climbing walls to their homes to keep their skills polished. It’s also a great way to help young kids get into the sport. However, we’re not sure these homeowners have thought about the potential problems their climbing wall might cause. To us, this looks like an invitation for burglars to climb onto the balcony above. Let’s hope they keep their doors locked securely.
Structural Issues
Some people don’t have the funds or planning permission to get a proper balcony built, but are still desperate for some outdoor space. These residents clearly decided that they needed to take matters into their own hands. While this is certainly an impressive bit of carpentry, we’re a little worried about its structural integrity. Hopefully, they’re not storing anything too heavy in there, otherwise it looks like a collapse could be imminent.
Stunning View
One of the things we look for in a balcony is the view. A good view can help give the space a sense of tranquility and can offer perspective after a stressful day. If the view isn’t of some stunning natural beauty, it should at least give a window into the outside world. Unfortunately, this balcony didn't understand the assignment. The residents definitely don’t have a view, but hey, maybe staring at a blank wall can be meditative as well.
Unique Decor
This balcony could easily top the list of creepiest designs. The owner seems to love hunting and collecting animal skulls, and there are far too many of them on display. A few might be interesting, but covering the entire balcony with skulls feels like overkill (literally). Picture walking by at night and seeing rows of skulls staring back at you. The eerie sense of being watched by those lifeless eyes is enough to send chills down anyone’s spine.
Lucky One
In this massive building, only one apartment was deemed worthy of getting a balcony. We’re not sure whether it was part of the original design or added on later, but one thing’s for sure, that’s got to elicit some jealousy among the neighbors, even if the view is only of a car park. We just hope that it’s structurally sound because let’s be real, karma might be coming for the privileged individual who demanded their own outdoor space in this complex.
Innovative Storage
When you have limited space, you have to get creative, and honestly, we’re impressed with this apartment resident’s resourcefulness. Yes, it might not be the most attractive of balconies, but they’ve certainly made use of every nook and cranny. We’ll never get a chance to see the inside of this home, but we can bet that every inch of space is utilized. If this balcony is any indication, they know how to make the most of even the smallest areas.
Take a Dip
When you live in an apartment without access to a pool, your options are limited. Some people head to the nearest public pool, but these residents decided to build their own right on the balcony. While it might seem like a creative solution, it raises serious safety concerns. The weight of all that water, combined with people lounging around, could be more than the balcony can handle. Let's hope things don't end with a splash.
Rustic Charm
When we think of idyllic European countryside, this is exactly the kind of scene we picture. A crumbling old balcony, draped in lace and drenched in sunlight. Yes, it might not be fancy, but this is exactly the kind of balcony we’d love to pass by on a trip to Tuscany. The charm of its worn edges and rustic feel just adds to its timeless beauty, making it picture-perfect for a postcard.
Making a Statement
This balcony is bound to catch the attention of anyone passing by—and not in a good way. While the design may be a personal choice or a nod to alternative beliefs, it’s a pretty bold statement to make. Hopefully, everyone in the building respects each other’s spiritual beliefs and choices, otherwise, this could definitely cause some awkwardness in the stairwell. We can imagine the neighbors feeling a bit unsettled.
Ice, Ice, Baby
Balconies can become very dangerous in the winter when icicles form along their perimeters, just waiting to fall on unsuspecting passersby below. However, this ice build-up is next level. We’re not sure how this could have happened, but these residents have a big problem on their hands. It might be time to get the hairdryers out before these enormous icicles get any bigger.
Ship Shape
This balcony takes "making a statement" to a whole new level. Shaped like the prow of a Viking longship, it certainly juts out dramatically. It’s hard to tell whether the owner is a history buff or just really into Norse mythology, but it’s certainly an unusual choice. While it might look impressive, it’s a bit odd to see a ship-inspired balcony in the middle of a town. You almost expect it to set sail down the street.
Sleeping Porch
Some people go the extra mile to make their balcony cozy, but this resident has taken it to a whole new level by placing a full-sized bed outside. While it might sound like a great spot for an afternoon nap or stargazing at night, there are definitely some practical concerns. What happens when it rains? And how do they deal with the bugs? While it’s certainly unique, we’re not sure if this setup is more relaxing or risky.
Who Designed This?
We had to do a double-take when we first saw this and we were left with so many questions. Who signed off on this design? Was it the architect or the builder who made such a gaff? Do they have plans to rectify it any time soon? While we’ve no way of finding out the answers, we’re sure that this useless excuse for a balcony at least provides a talking point for the residents.
Curtain Call
We might not be interior design experts, but we’re pretty sure curtains are meant to stay inside, not draped over a balcony railing. This homeowner seems to have missed that memo, hanging their curtains outdoors for all to see. While it might offer some privacy, the practical issues are hard to ignore. When it rains, those curtains are bound to get soaked, and a strong gust of wind could easily send them flying right off the balcony.
Before and After
How sad is it that this balcony, which once offered a view of lush greenery, is now facing sleek highrise buildings? The natural landscape has been completely replaced by the harsh reality of urban development. The loss of that greenery is nothing but a stark reminder of how much is lost when nature makes way for the city. Talk about a complete change of scenery.
Balcony or Birdcage
Safety is an important part of balcony design. Architects and engineers need to be sure that residents are not in danger of falling off their elevated outdoor areas. However, the safety features on this balcony are a little extreme. We're pretty sure we’d feel more like we’re in a birdcage than enjoying a spot of peace and quiet on this balcony. At least we wouldn’t be in danger of falling.
Odd One Out
If you’re looking for a subtle way to show off wealth, forget flashy cars or jewelry—try installing a balcony where no one else has one. This top-floor resident did just that, creating the only balcony in the building. Sure, the view may not be stunning, but the privacy and exclusivity say it all. Enjoying a quiet morning coffee while everyone else looks on is one way to flash the cash without saying a single word.
Solar Power
This balcony takes eco-friendly living to a whole new level. Instead of the usual decor, the entire space is covered with solar panels. While it might not be the most visually appealing setup, you can’t deny the practicality. The owner is clearly committed to sustainability, and with all that sun exposure, they’re probably saving big on energy bills. It’s not your typical cozy balcony, but it’s a smart, forward-thinking use of outdoor space that’s hard to argue with.
Small But Perfect
This balcony might be one of the tiniest we’ve ever seen, but we're sure the owner makes the most of it. With what looks like just enough room for a small chair and a plant, it’s a cozy little nook that still manages to feel inviting. While it’s far from spacious, it offers a perfect spot to catch some fresh air or sip a morning coffee. It’s proof that even the smallest of spaces can be turned into something charming and functional.
Pretty in Pink
While this balcony is far from being the most aesthetically pleasing we’ve ever seen, the owner added a thoughtful touch in displaying this traditional pink textile, matching the dusty pink walls of the building. With a good scrub and clear-out, this rosy balcony definitely has the potential to become a welcoming, cozy space, with the pink textile as a stunning centerpiece.
Fake Out
Few things are more frustrating than discovering a fake balcony. Why someone would create such a deceptive feature is beyond us. Is it meant to confuse or annoy? From afar, the house looks like it has a functional balcony, but up close, you realize there’s no floor—just a railing attached to the wall. It's not only disappointing, but also very dangerous. We can't help but think a warning sign would be a good idea.
Uh Oh
Careful planning is key when building a home, especially to avoid costly mistakes like installing a balcony with no access. This particular balcony looks great from the outside, but there’s no door or way to actually use it. Without a way to step out, it's a pointless feature that wastes money and adds nothing to the home’s functionality. Perhaps the designers should have focused on features that actually serve the homeowners.
Stacking Up
Europe boasts some of the most beautiful classic balcony designs in the world. As you wander through its charming streets, you should always take a moment to look up and admire the intricate details. However, not every balcony is a work of art. Like in this building, some seem randomly added, lacking any real thought for style, stacked haphazardly one above the other. Let’s hope they don’t all come toppling down.
Raise the Bars
This so-called balcony leaves us scratching our heads with its lack of functionality. It resembles more of a window with a vent and some railings than an actual balcony. It’s almost as if the designers were trying to confuse themselves and anyone else who might see it. Were the railings intended to create the illusion of a balcony or is this just a strange design choice? Either way, it’s hard to take this “balcony” seriously.
Unwelcome Guests
This tiny balcony has become a pigeon paradise as it’s completely inaccessible to residents. With no way to step out onto it, the space is solely claimed by our feathered friends. While we’re pleased to see these city-loving birds enjoying themselves, they do carry fleas and diseases that we’d prefer to stay away from. Maybe it’s for the best that people can't use this balcony.
Feeling Blue
Want to make a bold statement in your neighborhood? One surefire way is to build a balcony and paint it in an eye-catching color. Opting for a vibrant shade, like this royal blue, can really set your balcony apart. While this striking color definitely draws attention, it definitely doesn’t blend with the building’s overall aesthetic. We wonder what the neighbors have to say about this bold design choice.
Work in Progress
While balconies are a sought-after feature in many apartment buildings, sacrificing space for a random lamp post seems pretty illogical to us. Who would think that this extremely awkward placement of a streetlight actually makes sense? With the practicality (and legality) of this quirky setup certainly questionable we can't help but wonder what on earth the designer was thinking.
Land Pirate
If Captain Jack Sparrow ever decides to leave the pirate life behind and start a new life as a landlubber, this apartment would surely be his ideal home. The balcony, decorated with unmistakable pirate-themed accents, seems custom-made for him. With the Jolly Roger proudly displayed and a proud prow-shaped addition, it perfectly captures the adventurous spirit of a pirate. Let’s hope the current owner is handy with a pot of varnish to make sure things stay shipshape.
Narrow Escape
Tucked away in a narrow alley between two buildings, this balcony is far from picturesque. Instead of a charming view, residents are greeted with nothing but a stark wall, making it feel more like a forgotten space than a cozy retreat. With little room for anything other than a few potted plants, it hardly invites relaxation. We bet it leaves occupants wondering why they even bother stepping outside at all.
Good Try
With attractive wooden railings and a cute tiled roof, this space has all the makings of a great balcony, apart from one thing. The builder responsible for this construction forgot to include any access for residents to actually get onto the balcony. While it's charming, it's ultimately a useless feature. We bet the residents are longing for the chance to enjoy the fresh air.
So Close
None of these balconies seem to serve any practical purpose. Although they look charming with the flower-filled planters, they’re completely inaccessible, with the only possible entry point being a window on the side. Why would the owners invest in such features that are clearly of little use to the residents? Perhaps they imagined the residents had a bit of Tarzan spirit in them.
Big Freeze
Covered in sparkling icicles, this balcony looks like a scene from a winter fairy tale. The shimmering ice hangs down like natural decorations, creating a beautiful sight for anyone passing by. While it’s pretty to look at, those sharp icicles can be dangerous. They could turn this lovely winter view into a potential hazard. It’s a stunning sight, but it definitely makes you think twice about stepping outside.
Design Flaw
This historic building looks like it was carefully designed with intention. The red brick, the wrought iron railings—it all fits together perfectly. However, the architect obviously missed a trick when adding in this little balcony. Not only is it missing an access point but also, one wrong move could get you impaled on the spiked railings below. We’ll be avoiding this one at all costs, thank you very much.
No Way Out
If you want to use this balcony, you’d better go ahead and sharpen your parkour skills as the only way to access both balconies is by jumping or perhaps slithering through that tiny window. We can't help but wonder why anyone would design a building this way. What’s the point of creating a balcony if no one can actually use it?
Not Easy Being Green
This towering green building is a bit of an optical illusion. While it appears to have a stack of balconies, if you look a little closer, it becomes clear that only the top one actually has any outdoor space. Sure, it’s a striking design choice, but is it accessible and functional? This ultra-urban construction makes us feel like upping sticks and heading for the countryside.
No Kids Allowed
This balcony is definitely not for the faint of heart. With no walls on the sides, it's a precarious situation for anyone daring enough to step outside. The open design may offer an unobstructed view, but it also raises serious safety concerns. One misstep could easily lead to a fall, making this a risky space to enjoy. You wouldn’t catch us venturing out, let alone letting kids play out here. Let’s hope the walls are on their way.
Random Access
If you have OCD, look away now. The balconies on this building are seriously unappealing and may even cause discomfort to those who appreciate symmetry. The haphazard placement and mismatched sizes create a chaotic visual effect, making it difficult to understand the design intention. For anyone with a keen eye for order, the irregular layout could be frustrating. Whatever the designer was going for, it didn’t work.
Rent Hike
This window is trying to pass itself off as a balcony, thanks to the addition of some railings. Maybe the landlord thought it justified a higher rent, but let’s be honest—it’s more like a fence than a real balcony. While some might call it a "Juliet" balcony because of the French doors, there's no actual space to step out. We can't help but wonder, what’s the point?
Dali’s Balcony
This balcony looks like it stepped right out of a Salvador Dalí painting. With its curving, surreal design, it seems like it’s melting off the side of the house. While it’s definitely an eye-catcher, we'd hesitate before leaning on those railings. It’s a bold, artistic statement for sure, but whether it’s practical is another question. You might feel more like you’re standing on a sculpture than a real balcony.
Take Care
Although this balcony wins big points for simplicity, you'll want to avoid it if you’re clumsy or if you've had a few too many drinks. Despite being on a lower floor, it could lead to a pretty nasty fall. At least it might provide access to your car on the street below if you're in need of a quick escape!
Herding Cats
This tiny ladder seems more suited for a cat than a human, making us wonder if the homeowner built it specifically for their feline friend. It’s a thoughtful way to let the cat return home safely at night. But there's a downside—if the cat can climb it, what's stopping burglars or even curious wildlife like squirrels or possums from following suit? It's a cute idea, but maybe not the most secure way to welcome furry (or unwanted) visitors.
Bricks and Mortar
These red brick balconies might leave you scratching your head! At first glance, they look like windows, but peek a little closer, and you'll notice those tiny railings. They’re barely big enough to stand on, making us wonder what the point is. Are they for fresh air or just to confuse passersby? Either way, these quirky little spots don’t seem ideal for enjoying the sunset—unless you plan to lean out and hope for the best.
