Tom Cruise is one of the biggest names in Hollywood. He has headlined blockbuster after blockbuster, collected awards, and built a global fanbase. Between the looks, the films and the tabloid romances, he seems like an open book. But there’s a tougher, quieter story behind the spotlight that a lot of people don’t know.

Born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV in Syracuse on July 3, 1962, he was the only boy among four children. His dad worked as an electrical engineer and his mom was a special education teacher, yet the family often struggled to make ends meet. At age nine they moved to Canada where young Tom first showed an appetite for performing. Even as he dreamed of escaping poverty, life kept throwing him curveballs.

Cruise struggled in school and at seven was diagnosed with dyslexia, which made reading a challenge. At 14 he surprised everyone by enrolling in a theological seminary in Ohio, a move his teachers later said was largely for education rather than a calling. His love of acting kept pulling him back, especially after starring in a school production of Guys and Dolls. After high school he moved to New York, waited tables and landed small parts fast, including a brief role in Endless Love and then the lead in Risky Business.

Cruise’s private life has been as headline-friendly as his career. Early relationships included Rebecca De Mornay, Patti Scialfa and even a brief romance with Cher. He has been married three times, first to Mimi Rogers, then to Nicole Kidman with whom he adopted two children, and later to Katie Holmes, with whom he shares daughter Suri. Those unions, along with public moments like his on-air gushes and a highly publicized divorce, kept him in the spotlight just as much as his films.

Cruise moved from action-romantic lead to franchise maker, producing and starring in Mission: Impossible and scoring hits like Top Gun and Jerry Maguire. He’s famous for doing many of his own stunts, from skydives to hanging off a plane, and he even earned a pilot’s license and owns a Gulfstream jet. Off camera he’s shown up in emergencies, from rescuing people at sea to helping crash victims and covering hospital bills. Still busy, he keeps juggling big projects, homes around the world, and a taste for fast cars.

Working three jobs to support her family, Mary Lee Mapother was stretched to breaking point. And when an employer instructed her to move a washing machine on her own, that’s exactly what happened. Mapother slipped a disk in her back, and was left bedridden for eight months. It fell to the young Cruise, now the man of the house, to take up the burden and look after his mother and family. Cruise stepped up to the challenge and began providing for the family, as well as caring for his mother.

Despite his hardships at home, Cruise never forgot the thrill of capturing an audience onstage. He knew that acting was what he wanted to do, and he stayed focused on his dream even when his family struggles were so intense. Cruise juggled his jobs, looking after his mother, and taking care of his sisters, with regularly performing in drama classes and school plays. It seemed clear to everyone that Cruise was on his way to a career in showbiz—which is why everyone was so surprised with what happened next.

With Cruise’s love for performing and his talent for drama, everyone assumed that his career choice for the future would be one in acting. That’s why his friends and family were so surprised when Cruise, at the age of 14, enrolled in a theological seminary in Ohio, and declared his intention to become a priest. Cruise went to the seminary after hearing Father Ric Schneider give a talk at St. Raphael the Archangel school. But it seems that he was still serious about becoming an actor and as Schneider later shared, he probably enrolled in the seminary education purposes only. "It was pretty obvious," Schneider said. "I think he went there to get an education. I didn't get a sense he was serious about the priesthood or the religious life."

Guys and Dolls

Before he graduated from high school, Cruise had one particular role in a school production that would see him well and truly bitten by the acting bug. It was as the star of the school’s performance of Guys and Dolls, that the young actor realized that he could not escape his destiny. He graduated from high school later that year, and he knew exactly what he wanted to do next. Now it was time to announce his dramatic change in plans to his family, and what it would mean for all of them.

The Big Apple

After graduating from high school, Cruise announced that he had decided to move to New York to pursue an acting career. Cruise’s mother had just remarried, and she and her new husband were supportive of the decision. “Tom said, ‘Let me see. I really feel that this is what I want to do,’” she said to CBNC. “And we both wholeheartedly agreed, because we both felt it was a God-given talent, and he should explore it because he was so enthused about it. So to make a long story short, we gave him our blessing – and the rest is history.”

Big Break

So, the young Cruise headed to New York City, waiting tables, working as a busboy while going on as many auditions as possible. And it didn’t take long for this talented guy to get his big break. Less than five months after moving to the Big Apple, he secured his first role, a small part in the 1981 Brooke Shields movie Endless Love. It was only a small role, but Cruise knew that this meant he was on his way. Sure enough, what happened next served to propel him to superstardom.

Rise to the Top

Cruise started getting more and more parts in different movies. As time went on, he slowly began making his name within the industry as a talented actor, and before long he was going for roles as the leading man. Cruise didn’t lose sight of his dream, and went on audition after audition, until finally, his hard work and determination paid off. He landed the lead part in the now-iconic movie Risky Business. The movie landed Cruise firmly on the Hollywood map—but it was his next film that would cement him as a superstar.

Top Gun

Cruise’s next movie, Top Gun propelled him from popular actor to bona fide superstar. Released in 1986, it was the highest-grossing movie of the year, and cemented Cruise firmly as Hollywood royalty. It received a wide range of critical acclaim and was notably nominated for four Academy Awards, winning one. It also won a Golden Globe. Not bad for a poor kid from Kentucky who struggled in school—Cruise had soared to the top of the showbiz industry. He had well and truly made it. And soon enough, it would be his personal life that would catch the headlines.

Of course, a heartthrob like Tom Cruise received his fair share of female fans—both on and off screen. Cruise has been well known for his various high-profile romances, starting off his career as a ladies’ man with dalliances with some of the most famous women of the times—and often several years older than him. After starring in Risky Business together, Cruise had a romance with actress Rebecca De Mornay, three years his senior. But this wasn’t the only famous fling that Cruise would engage in during his time on set.

Cruise also famously had a romance with American singer and songwriter Patti Scialfa. Scialfa had just come off from tour with Bruce Springsteen, who she would later to go on to marry. But neither Cruise now Scialfa knew that at the time, of course, and dated each other for a few months. Scialfa was nine years older than Cruise, but that clearly didn’t bother either of them—after all, when there’s a true connection, age is nothing but a number.

It may surprise you to learn that Cruise also had a dalliance with legendary diva Cher, back in the late eighties. Cruise first met Cher, 16 years his senior, in Malibu in 1986 where they were both attending Sean Penn and Madonna’s wedding. They later bonded at an event at the White House, where they had both been invited to a fundraiser for sufferers of dyslexia. They bonded over their shared condition and shared a romance that Cher remembers fondly even to this day. Only about 20 years later it was confirmed by the two that they actually were dating and in 2018, Cher opened up about their relationship in an interview with Times and said that the two are still friends.

As well as the well-known women he has dated, Cruise has in fact also been married a total of three times. You may be more familiar with his later marriages, but there’s an earlier one you may not know about. In 1987, Cruise married actress Mimi Rogers, probably best known for her role in the 1991 religious’ drama The Rapture. Though they seemed blissfully happy at first, the couple’s marriage had broken down by the end of 1989, and they split up in 1990.

After the success of Top Gun, Cruise went on to star in a number of successful Hollywood movies. Now well-known for his typical roles as the action superhero, while of course also always playing the heartthrob, Cruise became a well-regarded fixture on the Hollywood circuit. The next most high-profile films Cruise starred in were The Color of Money in 1986, and then the iconic Cocktail in 1988. The latter was a massive box office success—but it was the next movie that had a huge impact on his acting career and status in Hollywood.

Cruise had firmly established himself as one of Hollywood’s top leading men, starring in a host of successful films that featured him as a tough-guy action man, or a traditional romantic lead—and sometimes both! But it was time for Cruise to try something a little bit different—which he did in his next film, Rain Man. This 1988 classic won heaps of critical acclaim, including the Academy Award for Best Film. Cruise was now established as not only a big star, but also as a serious actor.

While filming Days of Thunder in 1990, 28-year-old Cruise met 23-year-old actress Nicole Kidman, and there was an instant attraction between the two and they got married that same year. During their 11 years of marriage, they adopted two children together. Kidman later said in an interview about their relationship that "I got married really fast and really young," she Who magazine. "But I don't regret that because it got me Bella and Connor, and I did have a fantastic marriage for a long period." She also admitted that, “I was a child, really, when I got married. And I needed to grow up."

Earlier this year, fans of both Cruise and Kidman were intrigued and delighted when they got a peep at the behind-the-scenes reality of their lives. And that peep came from none other than Cruise and Kidman’s daughter, Isabella "Bella" Kidman Cruise, who posted a rare selfie on her Instagram page. Illustrator and photographer Bella, who normally shies away from the spotlight, teased her fans with the caption “All that glitters is gold.. oh wait, it's just another Instagram filter.” Is this a subtle dig at the glitz and glamor of her parents’ Hollywood lives? Or a teaser for a new release of art? We can only wait and see.

Critical Acclaim

Cruise continued to win praise from critics and reviewers with his performances in subsequent movies. It seemed that he was really growing as an actor, with each role showcasing more and more of his talent and range of emotions. In 1989, he starred as a Vietnam War veteran in Born on the Fourth of July, delivering a performance that moved audiences worldwide. Cruise’s performance won him the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor, and saw him nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Cruise continued to add to his already impressive roster of movies, starring in films such as Days of Thunder, Far and Away, and Interview with a Vampire. Originally, Anne Rice, the author of the Vampire novel, objected to Cruise being cast in the movie adaptation of her book, doubting his ability to pull off the role of Lestat. Rice later went public with a letter in Variety, where she apologized to Cruise for doubting him, and praised his performance. “Tom has now transcended the label of biggest box office star in the world,” Rice wrote. “He's better.”

After achieving worldwide fame, a host of awards and nominations, and silencing even his most outspoken and high-profile critics, what could Cruise possibly do next? Why, star in a movie that would spark a multi-million-dollar franchise, of course! And not only star in it, but produce it, too! Cruise’s next big role was as producer AND star of the super-successful action spy film Mission: Impossible. Cruise played Ethan Hunt, a secret agent who has been framed for the murder of his entire team. The film was the third-highest grossing movie of the year, and spawned years of follow-up sequels.

Every movie of Tom Cruise’s we write about, we think to ourselves, “oh no wait, THIS is the most iconic Tom Cruise film.” But it never stops, because there are just so many! Take for example, Cruise’s next film, the utterly iconic Jerry Maguire. Cruise’s unforgettable line “Show me the money” has become one of the most recognized and most frequently copied lines in movie history. His role in Jerry Maguire saw Cruise receive another Golden Globe Award and Academy Award nomination.

Real Life Hero

Tom Cruise may be famous around the world as a super-tough action hero, but it’s not just on screen that he pulls off daring and heroic feats to try and save people in need. For example, in 1996, Cruise and Nicole Kidman were enjoying a ride on their luxury yacht, when they noticed a nearby boat that was on fire. Ever the hero, Cruise used his action hero skills to send his skiff over to rescue the family aboard the burning boat. "If I ever get in trouble, I hope Tom Cruise is nearby,” his publicist later said to People magazine.

And that’s not the only example of Cruise being a real-life hero. In 1996, Cruise was driving through Santa Monica when he saw a woman get hit by a car as she crossed the road. The driver that hit her sped off, but Cruise jumped out of his car to run to her aid. The hero actor then accompanied the victim, a young actress called Heloisa Vinhas, in the ambulance to the hospital. And if that wasn’t enough, he later paid her entire hospital bill. “If he’s not Superman, he can be Batman—Batman doesn’t have super powers,” Vinhas said to people magazine.

If that’s not enough, Cruise also has a history of defending innocent victims of crime. In 1998, while living in London, Cruise heard his neighbor Rita Simmonds screaming in the street, and ran out to help. Simmonds had been mugged while getting out of her car, and the thieves were attempting to steal $153,000’s worth of jewelry from her. Cruise ran straight to the scene and headed off the muggers, rescuing Simmonds and her valuables. "Tom was brilliant,” Simmonds said to U.K. paper The Evening Standard. “He rushed down the road with his bodyguards and chased the attackers away."

In 1999, Cruise and Kidman surprised the world when they decided to star together in Stanley Kubrick’s erotic drama Eyes Wide Shut, a surprising—but successful—career turn for both of them. But not long after, in early 2001, the couple separated. To this day, the reason behind the breakup is left unknown but Kidman did share her thoughts about Tom with CBS News and mentioned that she would always love Cruise. "He was huge; still is. To me, he was just Tom, but to everybody else, he is huge. But he was lovely to me and I loved him. I still love him." She also told New York Magazine’s The Cut that "being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being harassed [in Hollywood].”

It didn't take much long for Cruise to move on. His next high-profile romance would be with Spanish actress Penelope Cruz. The wonderfully aptly named Cruise and Cruz met while filming their 2001 hit movie Vanilla Sky, and began dating shortly afterward. The couple were together for three years, before splitting in 2004. They remain good friends, with Cruz telling ABC America that Cruise is the most generous person she has ever met, and that he "has a huge heart.” Cruz has since gone on to marry Spanish actor Javier Bardem.

By 2005, there was no doubting Cruise’s stellar heights of fame and his great standing within Hollywood as a talented and versatile actor. Premiere ranked him that year as number 13 on their Power List, making him the most powerful actor in Hollywood. Forbes also ranked him as the world's most powerful celebrity. Having received multiple awards and nominations by that point, and been the star of too many box-office smashes to count, these rankings came as no surprise to anyone. But that year also saw him doing something very unusual.

Katie Holmes

Much like his movies, each of Cruz’s romances seem to be more high-profile and headline-hitting than the previous one. This is certainly true of his relationship and marriage to actress Katie Holmes, best known for her role in popular teen drama Dawson’s Creek. Cruise surprised the world not only by proposing to the actress, 16 years his junior, within a few weeks of dating, but by jumping on the sofa live on TV when talk show host Oprah Winfrey interviewed him about it. While promoting his film War of the Worlds, instead of sticking to the promotional script, Cruise, very uncharacteristically, gushed about his new girlfriend. Within 15 minutes, Cruise had leapt onto Oprah’s couch in a spontaneous outburst of enthusiasm for his personal life. It became one of the first viral videos to be uploaded on YouTube.

For a while, the relationship of the two was the most talked about story in the entertainment world. And in 2006 Tom and Katie welcomed their daughter, Suri, into the world. During her pregnancy, it seemed that the media just couldn't get enough of the two. Because of the frenzy surrounding the birth, Cruise and Holmes introduced Suri to the world via an exclusive photo shoot with Vanity Fair.

Since she was born, we rarely got to see Suri Cruise. Both her parents have kept her far from cameras and want her to have a normal a life as can be. However, Holmes did post a few rare photos of her over the years and talked about being a mother, saying, "We Kind of Grew Up Together." Nowadays, Suri is known to be quite the fashionista and she and Holmes certainly have a special bond, and the mother-daughter duo go on adventures together constantly.

It is quite rare to see photos of Cruise and his children. While the media keeps speculating about his relationships with all three of them, wondering if he even sees them at all, he was seen in 2019 with his son, Connor, which had put a lot of rumors to rest. And of course, just because Tom and Suri haven't been photographed in public in years, it doesn't mean they haven't seen each other. Both Kidman and Holmes spoke many times about wanting to keep their children's life private.

In 2012, Holmes and Cruise ended their hyped relationship. Rumors about trouble in paradise already started flying when Holmes was pregnant. The media still speculates about the exact reason behind the separation and both Cruise and Holmes keep quiet about it. After the breakup, Holmes dated Jamie Foxx but the two ended things in 2019. Cruise has been linked to many famous ladies since then, but nothing has been confirmed.

Flying High

As we know, Tom Cruise’s career really took off when he starred in Top Gun as a young navel aviator. Some of the film’s most iconic scenes feature incredible shots of these fighter planes swooping and flying through the air. But did you know, as well as playing the young aviator, that Cruise himself is in fact a licensed pilot? He received his pilot’s license in 1994 and owns his own plane, a Gulfstream G450 that is reportedly worth over $38 million. No need to worry about being stuck in traffic, when you’ve got your own plane!

Perhaps not surprisingly for a Hollywood megastar, Tom Cruise has multiple residences in different countries and states. It might sound extravagant, but for someone who needs to travel internationally for work, it also makes sense to have several bases, rather than staying in hotels all the time. Cruise currently has homes in Beverly Hills, California, Telluride, Colorado, Clearwater, Florida, Dulwich, London, U.K., and East Grinstead, West Sussex, U.K. Wow! Tom, please can we borrow your plane to get us to all your various homes?!

Being an action movie superstar, Tom Cruise has certainly driven his fair share of fancy, speedy, state-of-the-art cars on screen over the years. But it’s also in real life that Cruise is a fan of getting behind the wheel. Did you know that over the years, Cruise has amassed an incredible automobile collection—and now owns a whopping 15 cars in total! One of Cruise’s cars is the legendary supercar the Bugatti Veyron, long regarded as one of the fastest cars of all time. Good thing he has so many cars, in case his plane breaks, or something.

Tom Cruise certainly made his name in action-packed adventure movies, many of them featuring pretty incredible stunts. But one thing you may not know about this Hollywood legend is that he actually did a lot of these stunts himself. Some of his most famous scenes include high-speed car chases, deep-water dives, sky-diving, hanging off a plane as it takes off, and sword-fighting—to name a few! While most actors rely on stunt doubles to pull of these dangerous feats, Cruise insists on doing them himself.

Now, we all know that Tom Cruise is a huge movie star throughout the world. But did you know that the talented actor has an especially large fan base in Japan? Japanese movie-goers absolutely love him, and gather in huge crowds to try and catch a glimpse of their hero whenever he is in the country. In fact, in 2006, Japan declared a national “Tom Cruise Day” on October 10th. Apparently, this is in part to show gratitude to Cruise for always taking the time to meet his Japanese fans.

It may surprise you to know that Tom Cruise was honored with a star on the Walk of Fame pretty early on in his career. Cruise received his star in 1986, shortly after the world went wild for him after his role in Top Gun. It may seem surprising now, as his later films feel like they have eclipsed his earlier fame, but it just goes to show what a huge level of stardom he started out from. It was just up and up and up for this acting legend.

With someone as accomplished as Tom Cruise, you have to ask—what could possibly be next? Even though the actor is approaching 60, he certainly shows no sign of slowing down. He is currently working on a hotly anticipated sequel to the iconic movie that made him a star, Top Gun. Top Gun: Maverick is due to be released in December 2020. Whatever Cruise turns his hand to next, we can be sure he will apply his trademark determination and true talent. Tom Cruise’s heroism, both on and off screen, is an inspiration to us all.

Looking Back at It All

What makes this story remarkable is how many twists it contains. Tom Cruise goes from a cramped childhood, to seminary halls, to standing on the world stage as a megastar. He battled dyslexia, carried the household when his mother was hurt, and still found time to act, learn to fly, and perform crazy stunts. That mix of grit, talent, and plain stubbornness is what stuck with me.

From Poverty and Dyslexia to Stardom

Cruise’s early life keeps coming back into focus once you look closely. Growing up poor, diagnosed with dyslexia, then stepping up when his mother was bedridden shows a kid forced to grow up fast. That pressure could have shut him down, yet it pushed him toward performance and a scrappy determination to change his lot. It’s a reminder that hardship and drive often travel together.

Risk-Taking and the Craft Behind the Fame

There’s a reason Tom keeps showing up in action epics and intense dramas. He bets on himself, whether that means doing his own stunts, producing Mission: Impossible, or taking unexpected dramatic turns in films like Rain Man and Jerry Maguire. That willingness to take risks kept his career from ever getting stale. Craft and courage have been his constant playbook.

No part of Cruise’s life has escaped the headlines, from marriages to Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes, to relationships with high-profile actresses. Yet what stood out in the article was how his partners guarded their children’s privacy, and how rare family photos still stir the rumor mills. Fame amplifies everything, but the personal choices around privacy say a lot about how they tried to keep some normalcy.

What Comes Next for a Relentless Star

Cruise isn’t known for taking it easy, and the article makes clear he shows no sign of slowing down even as he approaches 60. Whether he returns to familiar roles or takes on new challenges, the through-line is the same: intense focus and relentless preparation. That matters more than any headline, because it’s how he keeps reinventing himself and staying relevant.
