Great Celebrity Cameos That Stole Scenes

Few things hit harder in a movie than a surprise A-list drop-in. A famous face can land a joke, deliver a blunt speech, or flip a scene with a single beat. We picked cameos that turned short moments into scenes you still talk about.

Emma Watson's Unexpected Axe-Wielding Bit

Emma Watson usually carries movies as a lead, but she doesn’t need a big role to make an impact. In This Is The End she shows up for a short, hilarious beat where she drops a few unexpected swear words and even swings an ax. The contrast between her usual image and this unhinged moment is what makes the cameo stick. It’s proof she can sell comedy in just a handful of shots.

Alec Baldwin's One-Scene Sales Monologue

Calling Alec Baldwin’s Glengarry Glen Ross turn a cameo almost feels wrong, because that single sequence dominates the movie. He strides in and delivers the blistering 'always be closing' speech with the exact mix of menace and swagger the scene needed. David Mamet wrote it imagining Baldwin in the part, and it shows - a few minutes of screen time that reshape the whole film. It’s a masterclass in how to make a cameo count.

Hugh Jackman's Brief Wolverine Drop-In

Hugh Jackman is virtually synonymous with Wolverine, so even a tiny appearance feels like an event. In X-Men: First Class he turns up during a recruitment scene, gives that trademark gruff reply, and then he’s gone. The cameo is short, but perfectly in character and exactly what the film needed to tie timelines together. Fans loved that quick reminder of the X-Men they’ve known for years.

Christopher Walken's Haunting Watch Monologue

Christopher Walken is one of those actors whose small roles leave big impressions. In Pulp Fiction he appears in a flashback to deliver a quiet, eerie monologue while handing over a gold watch. That brief scene reverberates through the movie and shapes Bruce Willis’s character in a way that lasts. It’s a great example of how a restrained cameo can carry serious emotional weight.

Johnny Depp – 21 Jump Street (2012)

Johnny Depp – 21 Jump Street (2012)

The world first met and fell in love with Johnny Depp on a larger scale on the iconic ’80s show 21 Jump Street. This show kicked off a decades long, successful career for him, as one of Hollywood’s A-list celebs. So of course it was very fitting Depp made cameo in the 2012 movie 21 Jump Street. It’s a pretty hilarious and unexpected plot twist, as the bearded gang member turns out to be Depp as a middle-aged Tom Hanson (the cop he played on the show), who’s been undercover that whole time.

Brad Pitt – Deadpool 2

This might be the most talked about cameo of the last decade, because no one saw it coming (many never actually saw it at all). Ryan Reynolds had the brilliant idea it would be fun to use a superstar actor for a blink-and-you’ll-miss it cameo. And luckily for him, Brad Pitt agreed. That’s why you can see this acclaimed actor for less than half a second (eight frames, to be exact) in Deadpool 2. And because Brad Pitt is such a cool guy, he even did the job for free.

Keanu Reeves – Always Be My Maybe

Keanu Reeves, everyone’s favorite down to earth A-lister – of course he would agree to play an exaggerated hipster version of himself in the much less famous Ali Wong’s first movie. Don’t get us wrong, we love Ali Wong – but it wasn’t a given Keanu Reeves would agree. But apparently he gladly accepted the offer, and took the role so seriously he even helped write the jokes. In the end it was his own jokes, combined with some improvisations, that turned his scenes into some of the highlights of the movie.

Seth Rogen – 22 Jump Street

Seth Rogen – 22 Jump Street

Seth Rogen is perfect for the type of comedy seen in 21 and 22 Jump Street. So we just loved seeing him make a brief appearance in the end of the latter. The end credits are mixed up with teasers for fake sequels (23 Jump Street, 24 Jump Street, and so on). The plots for these hilarious mock sequels become more and more absurd, and we see quite a few celeb cameos in them. For 29 Jump Street – Sunday School, Jonah Hill has been replaced with Seth Rogen, who says no one is going to notice the difference. Which let’s be honest, is sort of accurate…

Will Smith – Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues

Will Smith in the Anchorman sequel? That’s a cameo we never knew we needed, but we’re very grateful Will was up for the job. Jim Carrey, Harrison Ford, and Sasha Baron Cohen are just a few of the other talented stars who made cameos in this hilarious scene, all as anchors from different countries and channels. Will Smith shows up as the dapper looking ESPN All Sports anchor. And armed with a bat – him and the others gave us the most hilarious fight scene ever.

Neil Patrick Harris – Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle

It’s always exciting when actors make cameos as themselves, because it shows they don’t take themselves too seriously. We know that they’re not actually playing who they really are, but exaggerated, fake versions. Which is exactly why it’s funny. In this case, our favorite HIMYM actor Neil Patrick Harris unexpectedly shows up in Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle. The two leads pick him up as a hitchhiker – and freak out when they realize it’s Neil Patrick Harris. But it quickly turns out Neil Patrick is a womanizing maniac…

Dustin Hoffman – The Holiday

The surprising and hilarious cameo by Dustin Hoffman is the cherry on top of this great romantic comedy. And the funny thing is, he did it just by accident. He walked by the set and wanted to check it out. They then asked if he would agree to a brief cameo, right as Jack Black picks up a The Graduate DVD and sings Mrs. Robinson. Hoffman doesn’t even interact with Jack or Kate, and they don’t notice him, as he shakes his head and mutters at Jack’s goofing around.

Tom Cruise – Tropic Thunder

Tom Cruise – Tropic Thunder

This is the cameo that made Tom Cruise haters change their minds about him being a one-dimensional action actor. Not only is this guy clearly versatile, he is great at comedy – and can really dance! He gave his friend Ben Stiller the idea of adding the mean film executive Les Grossman in Stiller’s new comedy Tropic Thunder. Tom had an oddly clear vision about how to do the character, and told Ben he wanted to have big hands, be fat and rude, and dance. Ben was hesitant at first, but as soon as he saw Tom act it all out – he loved it, just like we all did.

Ryan Reynolds – A Million Ways To Die In The West

This hilarious 2016 western comedy had a nice amount of fun and surprising cameos, but we’re gonna focus on our favorite; Ryan Reynolds. This actor has done it all, from horror to superheroes. But we kind of love him most for his amazing comedy skills. In A Million Ways To Die In The West, he literally appears for two seconds, and doesn’t utter a word. It’s all physical comedy, as he plays the random cowboy whom Liam Neeson’s character shoots in the saloon. But it’s still such a great cameo.

Margot Robbie – The Big Short

How do you explain the complex ins and outs of the US housing market and the financial crisis of 2008, in a way that’s understandable and entertaining for the audience? Well, Adam McKay, the director of The Big Short figured letting Margot Robbie do it from a bath tub would do the trick. As cheap as it is to use an attractive, semi-naked famous actress to keep the audience interested during a boring segment, we can’t deny Margot Robbie did a stellar job.

Bill Murray – Zombieland

Bill Murray – Zombieland

Bill Murray is not your average celeb. Despite his status as a seasoned and highly respected actor, he doesn’t shy away from small, odd roles. This one in Zombieland, and its sequel Zombieland: Double Tap, is one of his most memorable cameos. In these quirky zombie comedies, he actually plays himself (sort of). He plays a Bill Murray who has survived life in post-zombie apocalypse America by pretending to be a zombie himself, and that way tricking the real ones.

Natalie Dormer – Captain America: The First Avenger

Natalie Dormer is today a pretty well-known name, since she landed some big roles in hit shows such as Game Of Thrones and The Tudors. But before her career had really taken off, she had a small yet memorable cameo in Captain America: The First Avenger. She played U.S. Army private Lorraine, who gets lucky enough to share a kiss with Captain America himself, before Agent Peggy Carter shows up and ruins the romantic moment.

Matt Damon – EuroTrip

Matt Damon has a great sense of humor, and that might be way he has done some of the most hilarious and random cameos. This is just the first of many you’ll see on this list.   EuroTrip is still one of our favorite bad teen movies from the early 2000s. Filled with crude jokes, absurd storylines, and the kind of adventures only teens find cool – it also features Matt Damon. In the end of the movie, he plays a punk singer, convincingly rocking out to what’s now a classic hit “Scotty doesn’t know”.

Sigourney Weaver – Ghostbusters (2016)

The 2016, all-female remake of the iconic Ghostbusters got some mixed reviews. But everyone could agree the cameos from some of the original cast members was a great touch. Sigourney Weaver played the first customer of the ghostbusters in the original 1984 movie. In the 2016 remake, she made a short but sweet cameo as Rebecca Gorin, Holtzmann’s mentor. She might not be on-screen for long, but her crazy hair and eccentric behavior sure made an impression!

Samuel L. Jackson – Iron Man

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a sort of it club for A-listers – everyone wants in. Now, they can’t all be superheroes, villains, or romantic interests – but plenty are thrilled to do even the smallest cameo in these successful blockbusters. After the end credits of Iron Man, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury shows up and startles Robert Downey, Jr.’s Tony Stark. He invites him to the to the Avengers Initiative, which is of course a hint at MCU movies to come.

Matt Damon – Thor: Ragnarok

Here we have Matt Damon again, in a cameo Marvel fans and Matt fans alike wen crazy over. In the 2017 hit Thor: Ragnarok, Loki disguised as Odin stages a play about himself (narcissist much?). But people couldn’t believe who who the actor playing Loki in the play was. The cast and crew of the movie managed to keep Matt Damon’s participation a secret until the movie premiered, so people were super surprised to realize they were actually looking at Matt Damon.

Luke Hemsworth – Thor: Ragnarok

Luke Hemsworth – Thor: Ragnarok

In that play scene in Thor: Ragnarok, Matt Damon wasn’t the only great cameo. Luke Hemsworth plays the fake Thor in it, which is actually even funnier. Most people probably know that Luke Hemsworth is Chris Hemsworth’s older brother. Both these two have done well for themsleves in Hollywood, and Chris most notably for playing Thor in a long line of Marvel movies. So his big bro playing “him” in a play within the movie is just too good.

Hugh Jackman – Night At The Museum: Secret of the Tomb

Hugh Jackman in a comedy? Hugh Jackman in any role that isn’t Wolverine? Who would have thought. And who would have thought he’d be great at it! In the third installment of the Night At The Museum franchise, our favorite mutant suddenly shows up in a small cameo as King Arthur. We have a feeling Jackman agreed to this role mostly for nostalgic reasons. After all, he did make his very first acting debut in a stage production of Camelot, where he played King Arthur.

Jennifer Connelly – Spider-Man: Homecoming

Jennifer Connelly – Spider-Man: Homecoming

Jennifer Connelly’s small role in Spider-Man: Homecoming is of the more unusual kind, since we don’t actually see the actress anywhere. This cameo is more subtle, and clever. Peter Parker gets a new Spider suit, and it has this A.I. system referred to as Karen, which is voiced by Jennifer Connelly. An even funnier detail here is that the director Jon Watts called Karen J.A.R.V.I.S.’s wife (aka the wife of Tony Stark’s A.I. system). And Paul Bettany who does the voice for J.A.R.V.I.S. is indeed married to Connelly in real life.

Cate Blanchett – Hot Fuzz

Many missed this brilliant cameo, and we don’t blame them. After all, recognizing anyone under this type of outfit is near impossible. But it is indeed Cate Blanchett hiding under there, showing up briefly as Nicholas’ ex Janine Jackson in the 2007 comedy Hot Fuzz. How come she agreed to this random role? Apparently she was a known fan of the director Edgar Wright’s previous movie Shaun Of The Dead, so he asked her if she’d be up for the job. She graciously accepted, and even donated her salary to charity.

Matt Damon – Deadpool 2

Most actors who do cameos want to be recognized for it, so some of our favorites are one where the actor in question clearly agreed to the job for much less narcissistic reasons. In Deadpool 2, Matt Damon was at it again with another great cameo – looking nothing like his handsome self. If there weren’t so many knowledgeable, eagle-eyed fans in the world, we would probably never have known the round redneck with a huge nose was in fact Matt. He’s not even listed as himself in the credits. Instead he’s “Dickie Greenleaf”, a nod to Jude Law’s character in The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Tina Fey – Muppets Most Wanted

We all know Tina Fey is good at comedy, but we’re not used to seeing her lend her talents to something like a Muppets movie. Considering Fey wrote Mean Girls, and created 30 Rock (not to mention is a respected SNL alumn), it’s kind of surprising she would agree to this cameo. But it just goes to show she hasn’t let fame and success go to her head. And she aced this odd role of a singing Russian prison officer.

Mike Myers – Bohemian Rhapsody

Mike Myers – Bohemian Rhapsody

We love it when cameos have some hidden, easter egg meaning. Like in this case, when Mike Myers showed up as the EMI Executive Ray Foster. Devoted, long-time fans all got a good laugh out of his line “no one is going to be head-banging in the car to ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’!”. Because it’s of course a reference to that scene in Myer’s iconic 1992 comedy Wayne’s World, when his character does exactly that; head-bangs in the car to Bohemian Rhapsody.

Bruce Willis – Ocean’s Twelve

Bruce Willis – Ocean’s Twelve

This cameo is hilarious for several reasons. First of all, it’s a clever idea to have a famous actor such as Bruce Willis come and play himself, while thinking Julia Roberts is actually Julia Roberts. Let us explain. Roberts plays Danny Ocean’s wife Tess in the franchise, but in this hilarious cameo Bruce thinks she’s actually Julia Roberts. This makes for a very farce like moment. On top of this, everyone keeps complementing Willis for The Sixth Sense, while telling him they guessed the twist ending from the start, which annoys him to no end.

Glenn Close – Hook

Glenn Close – Hook

Remember that poor bearded pirate who got thrown in the Boo Box by Captain Hook? As kids we were just focused on how scary this was. But later one, we realized the pirate was actually Glenn Close! It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, and the mean Hook publicly shaming the poor pirate is definitely dominating the scene. But Glenn still deserves some credit, both for pulling off looking like a male pirate really well, and for some stellar acting. She appears completely terrified when being told she’s going to the Boo Box…

Sarah Michelle Gellar – All My Children

Sarah Michelle Gellar – All My Children

Before Sarah Michelle Gellar became our favorite vampire hunter in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, she got some great acting practice on the iconic soap opera All My Children. Then many years later, she made this great cameo. In 2011, during the show’s final week before ending its impressive 41-year run on television. Sarah Michelle hilariously appears as a patient with mental health issues, who believes she fights vampires in her everyday life. That’s pretty clever writing for a soap opera!

Daniel Craig – Star Wars: The Force Awakens

No Star Wars movie is complete without tons of Stormtroopers. But in Star Wars: The Force Awakens from 2015, one of them was not like the others… Our third-favorite James Bond (sorry but it’s true) Daniel Craig is actually hiding in that Stormtrooper costume. He’s the one who watches over Rey, which is of course impossible to know when you’re watching the scene. But luckily we have this behind-the-scenes picture which proves that we’re not making this up.

Lynda Carter – Wonder Woman 1984

Lynda Carter – Wonder Woman 1984

Wonder Woman 1984 has not received the same raving reviews the first movie got, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some great scenes and highlights people absolutely loved. Like this Lynda Carter cameo, for example. The original (and some would say real) Wonder Woman might be 69, but she still looks absolutely amazing. Lynda shows up mid-credit in the end of the movie, when we think we’re looking at Gal Gadot as she’s walking through the streets of Washington D.C, but as she turns around we learn it’s Lynda Carter.

Cameron Diaz – Minority Report

Cameron Diaz – Minority Report

This Cameron Diaz cameo is super odd. We barely see her, she doesn’t say a word, and we don’t actually understand the point of having her in the movie like this. But that sort of makes it greater. It’s likely you missed her, since these stills are the most clear ones of her. She appears very briefly as a businesswoman on a train, and we also see the director Cameron Crowe to her left. We’d love to know the story of how and why this cameo and scene came to happen.

Chris O’Dowd – Thor: The Dark World

Chris O’Dowd – Thor: The Dark World
Credit: No credit

Thor: The Dark World is far from known as the best Thor movies out there (you can’t win them all, even when it comes to Marvel movies). But, this little cameo is a funny sort of highlight. Chris O’Dowd appears as Jane Foster’s date, but can’t compete with the hunk Thor so she completely ignores him. O’Dowd actually forgot he did this cameo, which begs the question – how cool must your life be if you manage to forget you made a cameo in a Marvel movie?

Gene Hackman – Young Frankenstein

Gene Hackman – Young Frankenstein
Credit: No credit

Yes, some cameos are so great we can’t help but remember them even after more than four decades. This 1974 comedy horror, which many believe is Mel Brook’s best film, saw Gene Hackman play a blind man. Just a few years later, Hackman would win his first Academy Award for The French Connection, but his talent shone bright even in this small role. That scene when the Hackman’s blind character accidentally burns the poor Frankenstein’s monster with soup is beyond hilarious.

David Hasselhoff – Guardians Of the Galaxy Vol.2

David Hasselhoff – Guardians Of the Galaxy Vol.2
Credit: No credit

Why did David Hasselhoff have a cameo in Guardians Of the Galaxy Vol.2? Well, it all has to do with the writer/director James Gunn. As a young man he was a huge fan of Knight Rider, which as you might know starred David Hasselhoff. So when James started working on Guardians Of the Galaxy, he had this dream to get his old idol Hasselhoff to play Peter Quill’s hero. The joke then was that Peter told friends his dad was in fact David Hasselhoff, who was always away because he was filming Knight Rider.

David Bowie – Zoolander

David Bowie – Zoolander

This cameo could not have been more perfect. Because in a silly comedy about male models, who better to judge a catwalk walk-off than the iconic David Bowie? Bowie was known to break a lot of male fashion stereotypes, and was not scared to dress in ways that many people thought were feminine. As such he became not only a pop idol, but a fashion icon and rebel. So when he showed up in this scene on Zoolander, he truly played himself.

Michael Rosenbaum – Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

Michael Rosenbaum – Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2
Credit: No credit

If you’ve ever listened to Michael Rosenbaum’s popular podcast, you know he’s actually a really nice guy. But since most of us remember him as Lex Luthor on Smallville, it’s kind of hard to see him as anything but a bad guy. And many didn’t even realize Lex had turned into a weird diamond looking, sparkling alien in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2. This role was super tiny, and happened because the director James Gunn and Michael are good friends.

Ken Jeong – Avengers: Endgame

Ken Jeong – Avengers: Endgame
Credit: No credit

Who was the true hero of Avengers: Endgame? Was it any of the superheroes? We’d say the answer is no. Because the person who really saved the day was the security guard played by Ken Jeong. He let Scott Lang aka Ant-Man out of the storage facility so he could return from the Quantum Realm and together with the rest of the Avengers finally beat Thanos. This is a great example of when even the smallest cameo plays a big role.

Stan Lee – Every Marvel Movie

Stan Lee – Every Marvel Movie
Credit: No credit

We just had to include Stan Lee here, and it’s impossible to pick just one cameo. He has been in every single Marvel movie from 1989 to his passing in 2018. That’s a very epic cameo track record. Stan Lee, as our more geeky readers might know, was an esteemed comic book writer, and Marvel Comics’ primary creative leader for twenty years. So it makes sense he was given cameos in all the Marvel movies. It ended up being a running gag, and we’ll surely miss him in Marvel movies to come.

And while cameos can make a film 10 times better, it's hard to believe but mistakes can actually make or break a film! Because sometimes, mistakes actually make for a better film. And the mistakes, unscripted bloopers, and clever improvisations below ended up as some of the most iconic scenes in Marvel and DC films.

Cameos Keep Getting Wilder

The cameo game keeps ramping up, with recent films packing in tiny, dazzling drops from huge names. One new blockbuster stacked multiple surprise appearances from familiar Marvel faces, and fans had to pause and rewind to catch them. These moments are short, sharp, and deliberately playful, the kind that make viewers scream at the screen. They prove that a well-placed blink-and-you-miss-it cameo still lands hard.

Big Stars Showing Up Places

Lately we keep spotting major actors in places you would not expect, and it works. A pop-culture hit quietly featured a wrestler-turned-actor in a goofy, unforgettable moment, while a sci-fi epic slipped in a seconds-long appearance from a major star. Other crowd-pleasing films have welcomed familiar faces as little treats for fans. Directors are clearly enjoying sneaking icons into scenes.

Cameos Spark Wild Fan Talk

A single short appearance can send fan forums into overdrive. One live-action cameo in an animated blockbuster suddenly had people debating future crossovers and character possibilities. And other surprise appearances in franchise movies keep feeding multiverse chatter and casting rumors. These tiny gifts give fandoms something to obsess over for weeks.

Tiny Roles, Huge Payoff

Tiny Roles, Huge Payoff

Sometimes the best cameo is the smallest one. A two-second physical gag or a one-line drop can become the most talked-about part of a movie. Filmmakers use these brief turns to land jokes, plant clues, or reward eagle-eyed viewers. The trick is knowing when less really is more.

Why Directors Keep Using Cameos

Cameos are cheap thrills that do a lot of work. They inject surprise, spark conversation, and can hint at bigger plans without committing to long storylines. For audiences they are tiny rewards, and for filmmakers they are flexible tools. Expect more sneaky appearances as studios chase buzz and fans chase Easter eggs.
