Why This Teen Stopped Brushing Her Hair
A haircut can change the way you feel about yourself. We expect stylists to do more than tidy split ends; they help us face the day. So when a 16-year-old walked into Capri Salon, the student stylist assumed it would be routine. What waited under the girl’s hood turned that appointment into something neither of them expected.
Student Stylist Meets a Worried New Client
Kayley Olsson was a student hairdresser finishing hours toward certification at Capri College in Waterloo, Iowa. She had handled lots of cuts and colors, so a lone teenager in the chair felt a little off. Teens usually come with parents, so Kayley took a breath and got to work. She planned to help, but she didn’t yet know how big the job would be.
The Hood Came Off, The Mess Revealed
When the girl lowered her hood, Kayley saw hair matted worse than anything she'd treated before. The hair was waist-length, but clumped into tight knots that hid the texture and length. This was not a quick comb-through situation. Kayley paused, thinking through how to tackle such severe matting without giving up on the hair.
Shave It Or Save It, Tough Call
The easy options were obvious: shave it or cut it all away. Kayley and fellow student Mariah Wegner did not want to surrender that hair without trying. They chose the slow route, washing and saturating the tangles with conditioner before attempting to comb them out. Even with two stylists, they knew it would be a long, physical job.
Thirteen Hours Of Work, One New Smile
Over two days the pair spent about 13 hours detangling, pulling, and talking the girl through the pain. As they worked, she opened up about severe depression after her parents’ divorce and how basic care had slipped away. By the end they had the hair down to her shoulders, styled and curled, and she said she would finally smile for school pictures. Kayley later shared the story to raise awareness about mental health and urged parents to take warning signs seriously.
Big Task Ahead of Her
She had never seen somebody’s hair that was in as bad of shape as this. It was an overwhelming task to take this girl’s hair and transform it into something that the girl would love. In fact, Olsson would later describe the time spent on this client as “one of the hardest experiences” she’d had before working in the beauty industry. And when this girl told her why she was there, Olsson realize this wasn’t a client that she could turn away.
School Photos
Of course, walking around with her hair matted couldn’t have been very comfortable for this young girl. But there was a reason that she had finally decided to do something about it. Her school was starting back up this week and her school photos were scheduled to happen in just a few days! We all remember the pressures and insecurities of high school and this girl was no different. But she had a much more difficult situation than just styling her hair for photos.
Just Cut It
Because she understood the nature of the task at hand, this girl felt that she had no other choice but to come to a salon and have the hairdresser cut all of her hair off. This was going to take more than just a comb-through to detangle—this would be a full-blown project. But this girl felt that there was no hope for a happy ending. And “she couldn't face the pain of combing out the matted knots and tangles.” So to her, cutting off her hair seemed to be the only option. But Olsson wasn’t as convinced.
What are the Options?
Instead, she decided to consider her options before listening to the girl and chopping off all her hair. To Olsson, there were many more choices than this girl had thought about. She didn’t think that simply getting rid of all of her hair would be necessary. She had to rack her brain for all of the possible ways that this situation could be remedied. Shaving it was an option, and so was cutting it all off. But both of these possibilities wouldn’t make Olsson feel good about this girl’s hair and her self-esteem.
Last Resort
Olsson really did not want to shave this girl’s hair. To her, it represented giving up on this challenging project, and she wasn’t going to back down so easily. Another hairdresser, Mariah Wegner, came in to help Olsson make this decision. She told BBC that “shaving was a last resort and something none of us going in wanted to do.” If it was salvageable in any way, they would not turn to shaving to fix this girl's hair. But was cutting it all off the next option?
Another Bad Option
Obviously, Olsson was going to eventually cut some of her hair—that’s the point of getting a haircut. But from the looks of things, the only possibility seemed to be to cut it unevenly—anywhere they could fit scissors among the densely matted knots. That way, they could get rid of the knots and work with what was left. Olsson did not like this option either. "Cutting her hair was absolutely not an option for me. I knew right then and there that we had to keep as much hair as possible," Olsson told BBC.
Help From Mariah
As mentioned earlier, another hairdresser was around in the salon when this girl walked in. Mariah Wenger was there to witness the original matted knots and offered more than just support for Olsson during this haircut. Both of these women were beauty therapy students and recognized the importance of a haircut in helping people to feel good about themselves. So with Wenger’s help, Olsson attempted the most difficult option of them all—actually work to untangle her hair. But even with two people working with her, it would still prove to take an incredibly long time.
Hours and Hours
In fact, even with both Olsson and Wenger working on the girl’s hair, one day was still not enough to make much progress. They started by washing the hair and putting on a lot of conditioner. Imagine how much they must’ve had to use in order to make the hair somewhat soft enough to work with! Once it was washed, they began the tedious process of untangling every tiny knot possible. These hairdressers endured over 13 hours of labor to work with this girl's hair!
It Wasn't Easy
Not only was this a difficult task for the two hairdressers, but the girl also had to sit through 13 whole hours of having her hair pulled and combed. Olsson and Wegner did their best to distract her while they detangled. "It took a lot of encouraging words, reassurance, and just plain conversation to take her mind off of the pain involved in removing the matting and to boost her self esteem and confidence,” Olsson told BBC. They worked and worked until they finally decided that they had done everything they could.
Making the Cut
Thirteen hours of work had allowed them to detangle the girl’s hair to her shoulders. This waist-length hair was finally somewhat silky and untangled, all because of the hairdressers’ dedication to the girl. The state of this girl’s hair really touched Olsson. When she later posted on Facebook about this experience, she wrote, “It honestly broke my heart and we tried everything we could to keep this child's hair for her!” What Olsson didn’t know is that her act of kindness in saving this girl’s hair was much more meaningful than she ever expected.
Opening Up
Going to the hair salon can often feel like a bit like a therapy session. Where else can you get pampered and also talk about anything you could want to? For this 16-year-old girl, this outing was incredibly important in more ways than one. Spending thirteen hours with Olsson and Wegner seemed to make her open up and feel a connection with the two beauty students. And through their conversations, the hairdressers began to realize just how much courage this girl had to have to come into the salon that day.
Making Herself Go to the Salon
Of course, school pictures were right around the corner, which would be motivation enough for anyone to want to change up their hair to make sure they look good for the yearbook. But for this girl, it was actually quite a difficult task to make herself get to the salon in the first place, and do something about her hair. In reality, the state of her hair represented the way she was feeling. And the past few years had been particularly tough for her.
The Real Reason
It turns out that this 16-year-old girl suffered from severe depression. Her parents had gone through a divorce a few years prior, which took a major toll on her mental health and her happiness. And as an unforeseen consequence of her depression, her hair suffered as well. Matted hair like hers didn’t come from just a few days of not brushing it. It was from multiple months of leaving it unattended and uncared for. This might not be as uncommon as you think.
Her Symptoms
In fact, a symptom of depression that often goes unnoticed is the lack of hygiene and self-care habits that one would normally engage in, including, of course, hair care. This is related to low energy and lack of motivation which often comes with depression. The girl explained that most of the time, she "felt so down and so worthless she couldn't even brush her hair, she only got up to use the restroom." This, the hairdressers understood more than the girl knew.
Kayley’s Connection
This girl’s story pulled at Olsson’s heartstrings, even more than she was pulling at the girl’s hair. Here was a girl at the age of 16 who was suffering from mental health problems, and it reminded Olsson of her own journey with mental health. Olsson told BBC, “I understood how it felt to feel worthless—a child should never feel like that.” Without going into too much in detail about her own struggles, Olsson was able to relate to her and felt a deep connection to her. And she wasn’t the only one.
Mariah's Story
Wegner was also touched by the story of the 16-year-old. She has two children and took it very hard once she actually gave birth to them, making her already present mental health disorders that much worse. "I was able to very closely relate to her mental health problems and the daily struggle that comes with them, due to my struggles with postpartum depression and anxiety," explained Wegner to BBC. These connections made this hair cut much more special than any of them originally thought. And they weren’t done yet.
Cutting and Shaping
After hours and hours of detangling and bonding, the two hairdressers finally were ready to cut and shape the teenager’s hair. They had detangled it to shoulder height, and everyone involved was tired. They were ready to move on. They got to work cutting and blow-drying the hair. Finally they curled it, and stepped back to appreciate their work. Olsson told BBC that that you could feel the emotions in the room. “Let's just say we both let out tears of joy!” she said.
Happy Ending
It was clear from the girl’s reaction that this was a transformation she never expected to happen. She didn't have to shave her head for the knotted hair to be gone. Olsson worked her magic to give her a haircut and she couldn’t have been happier. She told her, “I will actually smile for my school's pictures today, you made me feel like me again.” How sweet! Its incredible how something so simple, like a haircut, can make someone feel put together and give them more self-confidence. And Olsson was so proud of her work.
Touching Story
The hairdressers couldve easily taken the easier course of action and shaved or cut the girl’s hair. But her smile at the end of the haircut made everything worth it. Thirteen hours of hard work, vulnerability and kindness allowed this girl to feel much more beautiful than she expected. Olsson was so excited to see her emotional response. She too was emotional and told BBC, “we finally made this beautiful girl smile and feel like she IS worth something!” And that is priceless. This story touched Olsson so much, she decided she wasn’t done.
Sharing Her Story
Olsson wanted to share this story with everyone she could. To her, this girl represented a bigger issue—the importance of mental health. She shared a post to Facebook, explaining the situation and wrote, “At the end of the day I want this to be a lesson to people. MENTAL HEALTH is a thing, it effects people all around the world and of all ages!” She was able to use this story to bring more awareness and expose the ways that depression could manifest in a person. But that wasn’t all that she had to say.
Message For Parents
Olsson also had a message for parents everywhere. It might be easy to brush off certain behaviors as kids just being kids. But it’s important to take the time and really look how your child is feeling. She went on to write, “PARENTS take it seriously, don't just push your kids off and tell them to get over something they legitimately can't. A CHILD should NEVER feel so worthless to not even want to brush their hair.” And just as this story touched Olsson, people were also touched and wanted to share their thoughts on the matter.
Blame Game
Surprisingly, some people had very harsh reactions, but not towards the story—towards the parents. People couldnt believe that the parents had let the girls hair get so bad and didn’t notice. To them, this was a cry for help that went absolutely unnoticed. One person commented, “Why would you watch your baby deteriorate like this?” Just like the hairdressers, these people felt a connection to this girl and expressed a deep desire to protect her from her parents and mental health. But that was only one group of people.
Thankful
The rest of the commenters applauded the hard work of the hair stylists and thanked them for taking the time to help this girl. One commenter wrote, “to the stylist.. Thank you for taking the time to make her feel beautiful. This is something she’ll never forget in her lifetime.” This is a story that immediately made everyone invested in the kindness of the hairstylists and the well being of the girl. Some stories have the ability to make us feel connected to people we don’t even know, and this story was no exception.
An Unknown Impact
A 16-year-old girl walked into a salon suffering from depression. She had little hope for her hair or her self-esteem. What she didn't know was that she had picked the perfect salon, where two hairdressers were waiting to put in two days of work in order to transform her extremely matted hair and her outlook. It's incredible that a something as simple as a haircut could impact the way someone sees themselves. But what's even more incredible is the importance of human connection and kindness in helping to make someone's life just a little better.
How Long It Really Took
This was not a one-afternoon fix. Kayley Olsson and Mariah Wegner spent 13 hours over two days on the job, working eight hours the first day and five the next. They washed, soaked with conditioner, painstakingly combed out mats, then trimmed and styled what was left. It was slow, physical work and a long haul for everyone involved.
The Facebook Post That Spread Fast
After the cut, Kayley shared before-and-after photos and the girl's story on Facebook. The post went viral in August 2017, drawing hundreds of thousands of likes and shares and a flood of comments. Many people thanked the stylists and used the moment to talk about mental health. The attention turned a private, painful moment into a public conversation.
Long Story Short
Long story short: this was a haircut and a lifeline. Kayley Olsson and Mariah Wegner chose patience over clippers and spent hours listening as well as working. The teen left with her hair tamed and, more importantly, a reason to smile for school pictures. Small, steady kindness made that happen.
Why Small Things Matter
What makes this story remarkable is how ordinary grooming became a signal for something deeper. Matted hair was the visible problem, but the real issue was the teen's depression and hopelessness. The stylists looked past the knots, offered care, and the conversation mattered as much as the comb. Sometimes small, practical acts are the first step back.
Care Takes Time and Patience
This was not a quick fix. It took steady hands, a lot of conditioner, and patient conversation over many hours to get there. That slow work was physical and emotional for everyone involved. The time invested became part of the healing.
Skill Plus Kindness
Technical skill mattered, but so did the kindness behind it. Kayley and Mariah could have taken the easy route, but they chose to preserve hair and dignity, one careful tug at a time. The final cut was less about fashion and more about restoring a sense of self. That mix of craft and compassion is what people remember.
A Simple Ask for Parents
Olsson urged parents to take warning signs seriously, and that advice matters. If a child stops basic self-care or says they feel worthless, someone needs to step in with listening and support. A timely question, a gentle push to get help, or even a salon visit can make a difference. This story is a reminder to look and listen.
