With the invention of the smartphone, one of the important features of such phones; messaging, has taken the world by storm. Instead of talking in person, people now rely on texts to convey their opinions. It is supposed to make communication easier, but ironically, sometimes messaging can just cause people to misinterpret each other. One might ask his friend a question through messages, but get an answer that does not even correspond to such. There are many other ways for one to misunderstand the other party through texts, each having their own sense of humor.

What street name were you asking for?

If you are a member of the hip hop community, you might have made a street name for yourself. However, you might end up getting that confused with the name of a street when talking to others, and that was exactly what happened when Mark’s friend was trying to visit him. Instead of giving the street name that he was living on, he gave his actual street name. Luckily, they cleared the misunderstanding up pretty quickly. At least, now Mark’s friend knows that Mark performs hip hop music under the name Lil Marco.

Moms like to plan ahead every aspect of their life, including planning yours before you were born. They even plan what is going to happen before they go to exercise. It may seem a little unneeded, especially in this situation. Even though this mother is just preventing the possibility of someone texting her, her son was initially not going to text her anyway. He tried to make it clear that he wasn’t doing so, but he forgot about what his mother initially said. She should just turn on “Do Not Disturb” on her phone.

A temperature pregnancy test

Who knew that thermometers can be used to check whether one is pregnant? This guy seemed to look at the picture of the thermometer that way. To tell the truth, the thermometer does look a lot like a pregnancy test kit. Perhaps he was partying last night and was pretty tired, leading to him looking at the picture wrongly. Whatever the case, his girlfriend will not be coming to school because of a fever. Or, could it be caused by a pregnancy that she actually has?

Sometimes, texts do not really express the context for what one is saying, which can lead to wrong speculations from the other party. And when the other person figures it out, it is really awkward and embarrassing. Even though Kevin is probably in a deep relationship with his girlfriend, she should have known their love does not correspond to breathing problems. It must have been a sheepish moment when she received the text, but at the least, she will know that Kevin is a loyal friend as he tells her the truth.

Two different mindsets

Sometimes, the reason for misunderstanding each other online boils down to whatever they are thinking. In this chat, the sender was planning to go for basketball at 4, whereas the receiver had thought he wanted to perform an unrelated indecent act with him. The meaning of the chat changed completely, thanks to the receiver and today’s teens’ urban dictionary. Still, this is a funny conversation to look at. Don’t think about indecent acts when you are talking with one another!

Apple iMacs are equivalent to normal PCs

It is a known fact that Apple products are very powerful when compared to common PCs. However, even this Apple iMac will not be able to comprehend its owner’s dense mind. Obviously, Apple would have its own operating system, as this is what sets it apart from the main market. This owner does not comprehend the powerful MacOS despite the high price tag that he accepted. Alex would probably be slapping his head now. All Apple fanatics must be crying their hearts out when they see this online conversation.

It is often an unpleasant experience to be talking to your ex in person. Technology reduces the need for meeting in person, and you can say stuff that your ex would normally not like to her. Paige was thinking too much when his ex-boyfriend asked if he wanted to be with him again. Little did she know that he was trying to ask her to stay as far away from him like the sun is. Certainly, staying 92,935,700 miles away from him means literally being the sun around his life.

Grammar is very important

It is already bad enough that you need to use proper grammar when talking to your English teacher at school. But it is even worse when you have to use proper grammar sharp-eyed to your mom online, even in short conversations! They are definitely very sharp eyed in pointing out your grammar mistakes, but not in using technology. Still, you should thank your mom for spotting your mistake so as to avoid doing it again. Just for fun, you should send some grammar fail memes to her whenever she corrects your message grammar.

Puns for your ex

When you truly do not want to continue a relationship, it may be annoying when you receive undesirable texts from your ex. You can reply back in any way that you want, but some people like to play around with their ex using brutal puns. Sure, saying that she is fake like plastic is considerably rude, but it is up to him to see his ex-girlfriend in the way that he likes. It is not everyday that one will see a conversation like this. Hopefully, his ex-girlfriend laughed at his pun.

Overly worried mom and very innocent child

Mothers are very overprotective of their child, and although this is good for their child, sometimes it results in misunderstandings due to them being overly worried about nothing. Even though teens are at school for a long time outside, that does not mean a plastic bag in their bags will contain substance. This mother was overly worried about her child for this, to the point she did not want to reveal to herself what was in the bag. Imagine her reaction when she realized it was just a bag of pretzels.

“I missed the bus” is what one would say when rushing for school or work while being late. In fact, that is what Mikey’s friend understood when he received this message. But the next message definitely proved otherwise, giving the first message a whole different meaning. Turns out, he literally missed hitting a bus while being a student driver, but he hit a pedestrian instead. What are the chances of that happening? Whatever the case, Mikey’s friend is definitely not getting on a car with him anymore.

Looking for love in the wrong person

It is often an embarrassment to be full of emotions in front of the wrong person, especially if he or she is a stranger. This scene could have been avoided if such an “accidental” conversation took place, but online communication cannot prevent it when you have probably never seen the receiver’s face before. It was just bad luck that her phone had lost all her contacts, otherwise, she would have known that the receiver was just her Uber driver. You can probably imagine the humiliating silence after she said “Oh”.

Common teenage acronyms

Acronyms are useful when conveying words in shorter forms. If the other party understands, that is. It is not the case for this water delivery guy. As always, adults do not always get the meaning of such young acronyms that they end up confusing themselves and send the wrong texts. While this water delivery guy was trying to get the address (add) of this customer, the sender thought he was asking her to be more respectful. But who would want you to be nicer so as to deliver water? This is a facepalm moment.

Nowadays people love using short words, like acronyms, to express what would probably take up a few words. They are created by teens, who look to internet slang when talking to others on the phone. But often, adults do not get what these slangs mean, and when they try to understand the meaning of it, they probably end up even more confused. This mother did not know at all that he had texted her the meaning of the acronyms she asked for. It’s certainly very funny to see, given how coincidental the chat was.

A bad and dark joke

Could this have been another autocorrect mistake? It is certainly bad to have the words “JFK” and “shoot” together, considering the accident that happened in the 1960s. Saying such things may have caused Oswald to be frightened, as no one ever wants to be reminded of the gruesome accident. Unfortunately, he probably did not see the subsequent messages. He is probably hiding at home right now, out of reach of his phone. Oswald’s friend should not have sent such messages so as to avoid a misunderstanding between them.

The third wheel’s mistake

It is always respectful to positively acknowledge your friend’s start of his relationship. This is what this friend did, but it ended up with unintended consequences. Matt was okay with his friend’s relationship with Kelsey by sending a fist bump emoji, but his friend interpreted it as punching instead. Did his friend think Matt was jealous? Whatever was in his mind, having a friend who has second thoughts about you may not be a good idea, as arguments can get heated quickly and easily.

Is one word enough to understand one’s emotions?

It is tense when you do not know your friend’s mood just because you are not with him physically. You might try texting him, but replies from your friend are not enough to justify his feelings. Still, some people will try to interpret their friends’ feelings from the nature of the text. One-word replies may make it seem like your friend is annoyed at you, such as the conversation between two people. How many of you also initially felt that the receiver was annoyed at the sender? We were, too.

Complimenting someone using the wrong emojis

We love to compliment our family members, and we can do so using various methods, such as a talk and a treat. When you have no time, you can compliment them online via messaging too. But even a simple compliment can be modified until it disrespects one instead. It seems here that Bob was trying to praise his wife, but instead of calling her his best wife, he used a trophy emoji along with “wife”. He might not have known that “trophy wife” is slightly disrespectful. At least he attempted playing it off.

It is always horrifying to find out you lost your phone, but relieved to find it afterwards. Someone had found Gene’s phone and had messaged his friend to let Gene know. But the conversation turned confusing after that, with weird statements from his friend which will leave you laughing your heart out. While whoever found Gene’s phone is serious about returning it, his friend is chatting with the person as if it is Gene himself. Is he being a nitwit, or just fooling around with the person on Gene’s phone?

Parents trying to be tech-savvy

Although you might love technology, your parents might not. They prefer to complete their tasks old-school, and when they finally receive some technology on their hands, it often ends up being used haphazardly. This father was probably checking out the features on his iPhone when he tampered with the auto-text feature and ended up sending loads of texts to his son without realizing. It is certainly a hilarious scene, and hopefully, his father has fixed up the auto-reply feature. He would not want others to think that he is busy when he actually isn’t.

Alternate meanings to common acronyms

Almost every teen knows that LOL stands for “Laugh out loud”. But adults love creating their own acronyms with their unique meanings, which will definitely contradict those of common acronyms now. This mother was certain that LOL meant “Lots of love”. Well, the acronym does stand for that too, but it is not the main meaning that everyone uses, and her daughter did not hesitate to correct her. To her mother, it may seem normal, but to us, using “LOL” for “Lots of love” is definitely very weird!

Meeting up with 739 babies?

Meeting up with 739 babies?
Credit: Image from cottonbro studio / Pexels

It is already bad enough with the way this sender phrased his message. At a first glance, it seems that he is asking the receiver to meet at the playground where 739 babies are at. Turns out, “739 babies” is the name of the playground, but it seemed pretty hard to figure out it was referring to a location. What made it worse is that it was a wrong number. It seems that this stranger was annoyed after discovering that he texted the wrong way to a random person.

Emojis are regularly used in our life to express our thoughts using simple pictures. But it can also mislead people, which can lead to mixed emotions. A message consisting of an emoji of a screw can lead people like this man to be excited and agree immediately, only to be let down by the following sentence. Perhaps his girlfriend can use words instead of emojis next time, so as to avoid errors in their communication. At least he can still help his friend with the light fixture.

When you see this conversation and understand what happened to George’s friend, you are bound to laugh hysterically. They never knew that they were going to mention the same thing until the back. It would remind us of the double pointing Spiderman meme, which caught the internet with flame this year. George thought that the flowerpot falling off his house was really funny, until he realized that the victim was his friend. He was definitely caught off-guard by his friend’s response. Let’s hope that George’s friend is all well now.

Adults are kind of late to be faced with technology. They do not get used to it, and even worse, they do not understand the ways we use text to express ourselves like in real life via various forms. This mother did not know that using capital letters is to signify that she was shouting, and she had no idea she was “shouting” to her son like she was pressuring him to book the train tickets. At least, her son won’t need to bear with her shouting physically, but just laugh at her texts.

Snooze alarms are slowly gaining popularity

Thanks to the smartphone, people can now enable snoozing on their alarms, to wake them up earlier lest they cannot do so at an earlier time. But this sender visibly has not recognized this trend yet. The receiver definitely relies on snooze alarms to re-energize himself during his afternoon sleep, but the sender thinks he is just fooling around. The ingenious receiver should try to explain why he gives these estimates. Speaking of which, he should not wake up too late or else he would miss his War & Cheese play.

True feelings revealed

Some people like to chug down lots of beverages. Unfortunately, that comes with a cost. When you are intoxicated, you often blurt out things no one is supposed to know. It is good to know that Jillian’s boyfriend has sincere affections for her, and they want to get married, but Jillian must be confused after she received the second text. What has he been doing with Jen and Dave? Why is such an arrangement needed when they get married? They certainly had us in the first half.

Autocorrect being everything but useful

This is yet another case of an autocorrect joking on us. This woman’s mother had a long problem with her autocorrect. She simply could not get her message across, because her phone continuously changed her words to something totally different. What would her daughter be thinking when the mother was talking about her having a little accident? Her daughter is still genuinely worried for her. This shows true mother-daughter care.

There are so many instances of autocorrect livening up a conversation, but this is a case where autocorrect simply cannot be tolerated. It is already serious enough that this person had to go back to the doctor, and now he was told he had cancer. The doctor manning the phone might have accidentally changed “Dr. Smith” to “Dr. Cancer”, but the punctuation certainly makes it look like he was told that he has it. Dr. Smith will have to turn off the autocorrect function, otherwise, more people may be emotionally affected.

Cranky for some pasta

Marta’s boyfriend had messaged his girlfriend at the wrong time. It seems that Marta was being cranky at that moment, to the point that she ranted at her boyfriend too. A simple question asking whether she wanted pasta turned into Marta being very impatient on what her boyfriend meant. True, her boyfriend could have specified what he was talking about, but shouldn’t people in relationships be able to understand each other? Who else feels sorry for Marta’s boyfriend for having to put up with his girlfriend’s grouchy attitude?

Autocorrect misunderstandings

Autocorrect stays silent under our virtual keyboards, but when they detect a word with a wrong spelling, they immediately wake up and correct it for you. It often aids us in our conversations, but when it does so at the wrong time, the meaning of the sentence can change completely. A person and a purse are two completely different and harmless things, but mentioning that there is a person on your bed might get your boyfriend enraged. Luckily, it seems that he did not understand. Let’s pray that their relationship is still going strong.

Confessing one’s love gone wrong

All Scott wanted to do was to tell his girlfriend that he loved her. He probably could not do so as he was shy, so he used emojis to indirectly tell his girlfriend so. Sadly, that backfired. He planned to use the emojis to say that he loves female sheep, indicated to her he liked her, but his girlfriend was smart and recognized the sheep emoji as a male sheep. Well, Scott still has other tries to get his message across, but perhaps he should make his message more direct the next time.

Not understanding the use of emojis

There are people who blatantly use emojis even though they may not need to, or they do not understand how to use them. It causes a big difference in what they mean; sometimes good, sometimes bad. Tom must have thought his friend wanted him to put a horse to sleep when the emojis of a horse and bed was sent. Instead, his friend was trying to get Tom to allow Fontane to sleep on the horse. It could have been either of their faults for the misunderstanding. Who can put a horse to sleep?

Long life (or lasting) milk

We often see our grandmothers in a kind and gentle light, but what we see less is when our grandmothers can turn into fierce monsters. In this conversation, at a first glance, you will think that Grandma is trying to get milk to help her age slower. But turns out, she wants milk that has a longer expiry date. Unfortunately, her grandson did not understand and joked that she was being too optimistic about her age. Legend says that to this day, he is still removed from his Grandma’s will.

Never teach your daughter to drink

Parents need to be our role models. They can teach us anything that is beneficial. Drinking is definitely not in the list of what they can teach us. This girl was thrilled when she heard that her father was going to teach her drinking, only to be disheartened because of an autocorrect. This just goes to show how kids want to try new things, even if it is not suitable for them. If you are a parent, always check if autocorrect messed up your original meaning, as your kid will get fake hopes. Beware!

I like your name

Credit: Image from Abhinav Goswami / Pexels

Isn’t it interesting to know how someone got his or her name? People with the name “Leo” may have parents who always look towards astrology. Alice probably heard of this boy’s name, and gave a compliment about it, hoping to strike up a conversation about his name. But instead, he told her he got it for his birthday. Obviously, anyone would, given that everyone’s name is created at their birth. He is another dim-witted guy, isn’t he? Let’s just hope that the conversation did not stop here.

Show your love with words or money?

Show your love with words or money?

People love their wife very dearly, but is it the same on the other party? It may seem so for this man, who loves her so much he cannot even express his love for her with words via chat. As a solution, his wife suggested expressing it with money instead. It is a good idea, although his wife seems to misinterpret what her husband was trying to express to her. Such, in fact, that she is supposed to give a suggestion to the “problem” he’s facing. Or is she a plain old gold digger?

ATM machines are better than “I love you”

Everyone loves to hear a unique comment towards them. For some people, “I love you” seems plain, and they would want to hear other comments such as “I’m head over heels for you”. But for this person, it seems that he did not understand the context of the question Helena was asking. It might seem true that hearing the sound of ATM machines dispensing cash is satisfying, but he should not think about it when talking to Helena, who clearly hints to him that she loves him. Is he trying to hint something too?

Treasured weekends

The world is so busy right now. Adults are now working all the time, often without breaks, so whatever time one has to have fun leisurely (especially on weekends), it is seen as a privilege and not an entitlement. Some people spend their weekends just slouching in front of the TV, or enjoying a beverage. Even these, to Kate’s friend, are seen as a great way to spend time on, to the point she says so in front of Kate. At least Kate understood her friend, right?

Sneaky and playful mechanic

Fixing your car is a daunting process, be it by doing it yourself or with external mechanics. There are so many car parts, and messing any of them up can result in your car breaking down effectively. Steven’s friend was facing a slight problem with his car, and he asked Steve to give his opinions. In turn, Steve messed around with him, suggesting that there could be any consequences that happen. Although it was probably a joke, his friend just took it seriously. Hopefully, his car does have no problems.

Talking about lost hands

While this text is certainly not real, it is still humorous and worth a look. All Star Wars fans will remember how Luke Skywalker lost his hand to Darth Vader with a lightsaber. This text reflects such a scenario, with the names “Luke” and “Vader” involved. It seems that Luke was trying to signal to the receiver about the hand that he lost, but the receiver understood it as a friendly waving gesture instead. Hopefully, he has recovered and that the receiver finally understands that he lost his hand.

Scheming to get free ice cream

Can you imagine getting deceived by the very child you gave birth to? Lying about stealing cake at home as a young child is already a lot for a parent to take, but teenagers can also create unique lies to trick you into getting food. Is lying to one’s mother really needed just to get free ice cream? Whatever the case, prepare to have your child face an emotional breakdown, such as breaking up with her boyfriend. Remember to check whether it is true, otherwise, you may be coaxed into giving away free food.

Staying over with a billy goat

Staying over with a billy goat

Sometimes it’s hard to understand what one is saying when he uses words that refer to completely different things. In here, a billy goat can refer to a male goat, but at the same time, it is also used to mean William Windsor. When this person received a text saying a billy goat would be staying with his family, he was definitely confused on who (or what) was staying with them. At least they cleared it up by sending the picture of a male goat afterwards. Still, imagine a prince living in your house.

Man… some people just aren’t having good days. We get that, as we have had plenty of days where our brains just don’t really seem to work correctly. But it’s not all that bad when there’s no one around to spread your stupidity across the Internet and make you go viral. This person, however, didn’t have that luxury. When they were lost on whether the Pink Panther was a lion or not, their significant other just had to share it with the web. They had so many opportunities to realize their mistake, yet they never did….

Mom doesn’t really understand

Mom doesn’t really understand

You know, it really is just like Will Smith said: parents just don’t understand. Adults always seem to lag behind the newer generations in terms of their understanding of new gadgets, but it’s gotten even worse lately with tech becoming more and more integrated into our daily lives. While teenagers might be more comfortable texting someone than actually talking to them, mom and dad still don’t really know how texting works. This mom felt the need to tell her daughter that it was her mom texting her, even though phones kinda already give people that info.

Not allowed to eat crushed Asians

Not allowed to eat crushed Asians

We’re not sure if this was a mistake on behalf of the speech-to-text function of this person’s phone, but if not, this person really ought to go back and restudy their ocean-based vocabulary. When being asked if they wanted to go out for seafood, they replied that they were told to avoid eating crushed Asians. In case you’re a bit confused as to what on earth they meant be that, they were trying to say “crustaceans.” You know, like crabs and lobsters. That’s a pretty amazingly bad typo. Also, sidenote, just don’t order crustaceans in that case. Problem solved.

Here’s a pro tip for you guys: don’t let your friends and family members learn that you are good with computers. If you do, they are constantly going to be asking for your help whenever they run into a glitch or a bug. This poor person was trying to help out a friend with a computer problem when their friend said that their computer had no Start button. Confused by this, they asked their friend for a picture. Their friend indeed sent a picture, but not of their computer. That selfie isn’t really helpful, pal.

The danger of using emojis

The danger of using emojis

Emojis have really revolutionized texting. Being able to quickly and succinctly communicate emotions and other complex subjects by merely sending a tiny little picture has not only made texting more expressive, but it has also made it way more fun. But there’s a danger to using emojis. If you are using ones that the recipient doesn’t have, they are bound to receive some other character that is just going to confuse them. This is where text miscommunications happen, folks! Just see this side-by-side comparison to see what it looks like for one person versus another person.

Pressing the snow button

Driving in bad weather conditions is always scary, but the scariest kind of weather to drive in is definitely during an ice storm. Ice is the kind of thing that can make even the most experienced drivers among us quiver in fear, so everyone needs to be really careful in those kinds of conditions. Unless you have a car with a snowflake button, that is. If you do, no worries at all! Just press that and it’s smooth sailing. Wait, you’re saying that button just turns on the AC? Okay, nevermind, still drive with caution. Don’t even press that button.

The water is broken

Look, we understand that the woman who made this mistake is a grandma, but really, how do you misunderstand something like this! The first person in this conversation sent a message to their family group chat to let everyone know that their water had broken and they were awaiting contractions to start. The baby was on its way – hooray! Everyone in the chat understood what was going on except for grandma, who thought that there had to be something wrong with the pipes. You know, because the water was broken. Maybe grandma was just telling a joke?

Nice try, mom

Nice try, mom

As much as we love when adults make silly mistakes trying to use emojis and the lingo of young people, we have to acknowledge that it can occasionally get them into some pretty hot water. This mom sent her child a text about someone in the family passing away, capping it off with a “LOL.” Apparently she thought that “LOL” meant lots of love, and when she was informed of what it truly meant, she realized that she sent quite the insensitive text to many people. That one is gonna be pretty hard to explain!

They don’t run the Google

One thing that is common to all parents around the world is that they truly and unequivocally believe in their children. They think that their kids are absolute superstars who are capable of doing the most incredible things in the world. This person’s mom even thought that they ran Google, which is certainly a compliment. However, their mom wasn’t too happy with how they were running Google, as she was tired of the logo constantly changing. As her child points out, things would be quite different for them if they actually did run Google. Sadly, they do not.

There are a lot of weird things that start happening as you get older. You have to watch as your old friends start to settle down and get married, which is always strange. You then have to watch as those same people have babies, which is even MORE strange. Lots of people start to develop baby fever when they see all their friends getting pregnant, and that’s exactly what happened to this woman. Unfortunately for her, however, her husband misunderstood her message about “sporting round bellies.” He was just looking to get a mukbang going with some donuts and pork.

That is very coarse indeed

With texting, you need to be really careful with your word choice. Things that would be clear as day due to intonation in a real conversation can be confusing during a conversation that happens over text. Take this exchange, for instance. This person was looking to get a rough estimate on how long a process would take, but they requested a “coarse” estimate instead. You know, coarse essentially means rough, so it makes sense. The other person took it literally though, and their answer was incredibly coarse. A little too coarse if you ask us!

Okay, if we’re being honest, we will never stop being entertained by people’s parents who are struggling to adapt to using smartphones. There is just something so funny about it. This person texted their mom to congratulate them on getting a smartphone finally, but they didn’t receive a response. So they sent another text… and another… and another. When they finally got a response, it was their mom asking how to do a space in the most clueless way possible. We’re hoping that she figured out how to do it. It’s that big button that says “space.”

Using it correctly on accident

The term “YOLO” used to be incredibly popular, but it’s really hardly used these days. It’s gone so far out of vogue that it seems moms have started adopting it, which is equal parts sad and adorable. This mom used “YOLO” when being asked if she could afford her new car, although it turns out that she had no idea what the term even meant. Weirdly enough, she actually used it correctly, as “YOLO” means “you only live once.” Hey, she’s living her one life, she may as well have some fun and get a new car! Go mom!

Using a text as a test

Some parents are just so ingenious that it’s almost infuriating. This mom kept sending her daughter texts about the chores that she needed to do, and of course these messages were being ignored. In order to test her, the mom then sent a message about how she was going to buy her child a new car. Instant response. It turns out that she never had any plans to buy a car and was simply seeing if her messages were going through. Now that’s a diabolically smart mom right there. You’ve gotta respect that.

It’s a natural thing: as people get older, their eyesight starts to go. It’s not fun, but it’s just a fact of life. This mom’s vision had gotten so bad that she couldn’t even send a proper text without her glasses. Does that mean that she waited until she found them to write a text to her child? Of course not! She just typed away and hoped that it would make sense. And guess what? It actually didn’t. At all. Once she clarified, though, we can see that her fingers were almost in the right place. ** Some photos may be stock images used for illustration purposes only.
